Aix-en-Provence, France, *Maeve O'Sullivan

  • Maeve O'Sullivan, San Francisco State University

Before studying abroad I never thought I would be able to learn another language. I had taken five years of french in school but and still didn't feel at all that I could speak or understand it. Six months into my year in Aix-en-Provence I was carrying on conversations in what we called "Franglais". After that it was an easy transition to becoming pretty much fluent. Now I know that for me to learn a language I have to be immersed in the country and culture and I think it would be the same for anyone who finds it difficult or impossible to learn another language. I gained so much from my trip abroad and really enjoyed learning about French culture and experiencing their way of life. It was an eye opening experience that changed the way I see and think about the world. It also exposed me to many opportunities, one of which is a job I found at a B&B in Carcassone which is making it possible for me to return this summer. I never would have found it if I hadn't studied abroad. Do it! You won't regret it!

Maeve is a student at San Francisco State University
